Finžgar’s Birth House in Doslovče

Finžgar’s birth house, locally known as “pri Dolencu,” together with its hayrack and barn, forms an open-air museum that presents the building style and way of life of a smallholder (cottager) family in Upper Carniola at the end of the 19th century. In the basement rooms, there is an exhibition about the life and work of Franc Saleški Finžgar.

The original wooden cottage was built at the end of the 18th century. In 1849, Finžgar’s grandfather renovated and expanded it, after which it included an entrance hall, a black kitchen, a pantry, a main living room, and a chamber in the upper part, as well as a cellar room, a small room, and a stable in the lower part. The Dolenec cottage was converted into a museum on the 100th anniversary of the writer’s birth.

Franc Saleški Finžgar (1871–1962) is remembered in Slovenian literature as a master of folk-style storytelling. As he himself said, his sense for authentic language was shaped at home, by the stove, where he listened to the stories of men who gathered in the Dolenec cottage on winter evenings. Among his well-known works are the novel Under the Free Sun, the tale Servant Girl Ančka, the drama The Chain, and the fairy tale Makalonca. Insightful, principled, and honest, Finžgar earned people’s trust wherever he worked—as a priest, editor, and writer.
