SLAVKO TIHEC: DECORATIVE WALL ON THE FIRST FLOOR IN SECONDARY SCHOOL OF ELECTRICAL ENGEENIRING AND COMPUTER SCIENCE MARIBOR

The wall composition in the hallway of the Secondary School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science is positioned so that it confronts anyone climbing the stairs. The artist Slavko Tihec gained his first noticeable success after 1962 with the Traffic Lights sculptures and he achieved European fame after 1967 with his Aquamobiles. He was one of the first Slovenian sculptors who transitioned to an abstract form of art. His conversion to abstract art happened in 1959, which makes Wall Composition I one of his earliest abstract works. During the 1960s, he was particularly interested in creating new art forms. In line with this, Wall Compositions I is based on geometric shapes, which refer both to the artist’s enduring interest in mathematics but also to the school’s electro-technical curriculum. Despite Tihec’s shift to abstraction, the shapes in the portrayed bodies are still reminiscent of integrated circuits. They are further emphasized by the construction of the wall, which moves slightly into the space and ends with a now disused water fountain. This composition is not the only one created for the Secondary School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. Tihec also created its pendant in a contrasting colour scheme, on the first floor of the same building, and there is a similar figural composition by the artist Ivan Čobal on the neighbouring school premises.
