In 2004, the restoration process began for the museum building that has housed the Maribor Regional Museum since 1938.
By 2006, the museum unveiled the first phase of its new permanent exhibition. This display showcases the museum's rich history, which dates back to its origins in 1903, and highlights its diverse collections, including the Archaeological Collection, Art Collection, Ethnological Collection, Numismatic Collection, Maribor Collection, Costume Collection, Pharmaceutical Collection, Craft Collection, Musical Instrument Collection, Domestic Culture Collection, and Weaponry Collection.
Since 2007, visitors have been able to explore the lower floor of the castle bastille, where an exhibition on the city’s development is presented. This exhibition also features a display on the Italian fortification architects of the mid-16th century and an array of historical weaponry.
