National Museum of Contemporary History

Temporary exhibition / 01.08.2013 - 17.10.2013

Temporary photographic exhibition on view until 17th October 2013

at the National Museum of Contemporary History, Celovška 23, Ljubljana, Slovenia

The National Museum of Contemporary History also wants to give a small contribution to the organisation of the European basketball championship in Slovenia in 2013. By the preparation of a temporary photographic exhibition, 1970 FIBA BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP – THE MOON FOR YOU, GOLD FOR US, it aims to present a part of the life pulse from the legendary 1970 FIBA basketball championship and part of the cultural heritage from its rich photographic archive. Due to its close location to the venue of the 1970 FIBA basketball championship it was so to say a mute direct witness to the event in 1970.

The National Museum of Contemporary History houses the largest quantities of the photographic material in Slovenia, i.e. around  2,300,000 original photographs from the whole 20th century, among them more than 2,500 mostly black-and-white photographs from the  1970 FIBA basketball championship at the Tivoli Sports Hall in Ljubljana, in which the Yugoslav team won the title of the world champions. These are photographs by the seven Slovene photographers and photo journalists of note: Edi Šelhaus, Nace Bizilj, Svetozar Busić, Marjan Ciglič, Miloš Švabić, Egon Kaše and Matija Jurovič.

The exhibition presents a selection of photographs, namely the matches between Yugoslavia and other teams, the winning of the title and the opening and closing ceremonies in the Tivoli Sports Hall as well as some photographs of the life pulse at the championship.  The photographic part of the exhibition is supplemented by a film by Jože Pogačnik from the Archives of the Republic of Slovenia, by audio-video testimonies of Ivo Daneu and Aljoša Žorga, two Slovene basketball players from 1970, recorded intentionally for the exhibition, and a video projection of additional selection of around 200 photographs from the photographic collections of the National Museum of Contemporary History.

The visitors can also try their hands at shooting at the basket. The exhibition is of free of charge, on view daily (except Monday) from 10.00 to 18.00 and also during the matches in the Tivoli Sports Hall in the close vicinity to the Museum.
