Kasarna is a late Baroque building dating from the end of the 18th century. It is one of the oldest preserved examples of common workers’ flats in the country. Ironmaking families lived there until 1983. In 1985 it was listed as a cultural monument. Since then theMunicipalityof Jesenicewas renovating it under the authority of the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Heritage. Since 2005 the renovated Kasarna has been housing Music School Jesenice and Gornjesavski muzej Jesenice.
A reconstruction of a worker’s flat from the 1930s and 1940s can be seen there. Permanent ethnological exhibition shows the lifestyle of ironmaking families. Archive and photographic material of the Carniolan Industrial Company is kept in Kasarna and there is also an archives reading room.
