The Sports Museum was established on the 20th April 2000 by the Government of the Republic of Slovenia. However, it wasn't until the November 2001 that it actually started operating in the premises situated at the Kopitarjeva ulica 4 in Ljubljana, and it was only then that the Slovenian nation finally obtained a proper Sports Museum with the status of a national institution responsible for recording, collecting, protecting, documenting and presenting the rich material heritage from the history of physical culture and sports in Slovenia. Since 2013, the museum has operated as a department of the Planica Institute of Sports of the Republic of Slovenia, and since 2022 it has been part of the Slovenian School Museum.

Museum's collections obtain more than 11,000 objects, tens of thousands of photographs and 600 boxes of documentation, which were donated by many Slovenian athletes, sports workers, collectors, associations and others. It dates from the end of the 19th century to the present day, and includes the most successful Slovenian athletes, Olympians, pioneers of Slovenian sports, coaches and other sports-related people, as well as clubs, associations and federations. A museum library specialized in sports is also being set up. We continue to collect items, so we urge everyone who keeps any interesting items of Slovenian sports heritage to contact us.

The headquarters of the Sports Museum with its library is at Kopitarjeva 4 in Ljubljana, while the exhibition titled Collecting, researching, revitalizing: sports heritage and the Sports Museum can be seen in the premises of the Slovenian school museum at Plečnik Square 1 in Ljubljana.
