Voranc is Dane Zajc's most frequently staged play in Slovenian professional theaters. At the same time, it is also the author's drama that is most closely linked to a specific historical time and place.
How did the image of the tragic fate of a Slovenian farmer convince theater audiences in the 1980s? Why did the drama, which critics described as an unstageable text, become such a success? How does Zajc’s poetic drama, which articulates the existential condition of the human being and archetypal situations, function when it is set in a specific place and time?
We will explore these questions with Dr. Gašper Troha, Director of the Slovenian Theatre Institute, in a lecture ahead of the new premiere of this Zajc drama at SNT Drama Ljubljana.
